In addition to admitting that he'd be interested in playing for new head coach Craig Berube, Domi confirmed his agent, Judd Muldaver, has been in talks with Leafs GM Brad Treliving.
Although it's been known for a little while that there is interest from the Toronto Maple Leafs to retain Max Domi, the player confirmed in an interview with Postmedia's Lance Hornby on Sunday that his agent (Judd Muldaver) and Leafs GM Brad Treliving have discussed it.
“I know my agent has been talking to (Treliving), though I have to keep that discussion in-house,” Domi said. “Whatever happens will happen, but I’ve still enjoyed every second as a Leaf. I’d love to come back, it’s a special organization, a special group of guys.”
Domi is an unrestricted free agent on July 1. He signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Maple Leafs last summer and showed his versatility at both the center and wing positions. He spent much of the end of the last season and playoffs playing on the right side of star center Auston Matthews.
The 29-year-old had nine goals and 38 assists in 80 games last season.
Last week Treliving told TSN's Pierre LeBrun that there was interest in bringing Domi back into the fold. With approximately $20 million in salary cap space available for the upcoming season, the Leafs GM has a lot of things to iron out, like adding defense and another goaltender to play alongside Joseph Woll.
"It’s got to work for them and it’s got to work for us,” Treliving said of Domi and Tyler Bertuzzi, in speaking about both pending unrestricted free-agent forwards. “We’ve got, certainly, some issues that we have to address on the roster. There’s a pie and there’s only so much to go around. We’ve got a few guys who are up. And part of this is getting better, too. It’s not just being the same. You’re trying to get better in the process, as well. So we’ll see.”
