After a 6-3 victory for the Toronto Maple Leafs over the Calgary Flames on Tuesday, highlighted by William Nylander’s second career hat-trick, the star winger requested and was granted a day off for the team by head coach Craig Berube.
With no practice on the schedule, how would members of the Leafs spend the day off on Wednesday?
Well, it was revealed after Thursday morning’s practice in Seattle that “everybody on the team” is indulging in something entirely different than hockey – Netflix’s No.1 trending show, American Manhunt: O.J. Simpson which was released on January 29.
There’s been a handful of other documentaries covering the infamous case, but this new series showcases evidence that had never been seen in the four-part docu-series – making it that much more intriguing.
“I was watching that O.J. stuff,” said Nylander. “Everybody on the team is watching so I thought I would.”
But he wasn’t the only one who was doing some catching up on Wednesday, with teammate Mitch Marner also mentioning his binging of the show.
“Yeah, yeah, I watched it too. Crazy,” said Marner.
When discussing his thoughts on the series, Marner was hesitant to fully commit to what he wanted to say, avoiding getting too specific on his personal beliefs. However, his reluctance provided a humorous moment on the matter.
“I don't get how it didn't… I mean, I think everyone's thinking what I want to say,” Marner said, almost catching himself before fully revealing his thoughts. “It was the first really time watching something like that. It was bizarre. I was shocked at the end of it all.”
The 27-year-old is getting set to return to the Maple Leafs lineup against Seattle after missing Tuesday’s game in Calgary with a lower-body injury.
With the help of an additional day off, the Leafs will look to press on in search of their third straight win.
