Samsonov appears to have avoided another injury after he had to leave Toronto's 6-3 win against the Oilers late in regulation time.

Ilya Samsonov continues to experience close encounters with injury while tending the Toronto Maple Leafs net.

The goaltender appeared to be injured when he stayed on the ice in agony after allowing a goal by Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl that cut Toronto's lead to 5-3 with 3:39 to go in regulation time.

Martin Jones, Toronto's third goaltender on the roster. came on in place of Samsonov to finish the game and made five saves to help the Leafs preserve the 6-3 victory.

The good news for Toronto is it appears Samsonov is ok. "He got injured. And it's not anything near what it appeared or what I thought it might have done," Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe said. "I'm not going to give you too many details right now, but it looks like he'll be fine and won't miss any time."

Joseph Woll, who is slated to start against the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday, reportedly flew solo to Raleigh on Saturday and was given the night off to prepare.

With three goaltenders on their roster, Jones backed up Samsonov earlier in the week during the Russian's start against the Philadelphia Flyers, to prevent a situation like Saturday where Woll would have had to be placed into action on consecutive nights.

Samsonov's gear remained in his stall following the game, suggesting Jones may back up Woll for the one-game trip.

One week ago, Samsonov appeared to be hurt during the team's morning skate ahead of their game against the Carolina Hurricanes. Keefe later said Samsonov was fine and that he'd start.

Samsonov later admitted that that puck hit him in a "bad zone".

Samsonov has been solid for the Maple as of late after getting off to a rocky start in 2023-24. He has a 4-1-1 record with a .915 save percentage in March.
