Tavares made his first public statement days after the tragic passing of Gaudreaus.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have mostly taken to social media when it comes to sharing any public thoughts or tributes on the passing of NHL All-Star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew.
The brothers were tragically killed on Thursday when a suspected drunk driver hit them while they were on their bikes in New Jersey.
John Tavares has been like most of the other Leafs who have shared images and videos of the Gaudreaus in the wake of the tragedy. But on Sunday night, Tavares posted a message on his X account.
"It’s been difficult to process this devastating tragedy over the last couple of days. My family and I hearts ache for the Gaudreau’s and their families. We send our deepest condolences," Tavares wrote. "RIP Johnny and Matthew"
Over the long weekend, Maple Leafs teammate Max Domi twice shared his thoughts and condolences to the Gaudreau family.
"You will both be remembered as incredible Fathers, husbands, sons, brothers, uncles, friends, teammates and incredible hockey players," Domi said in a post on X on the weekend. "You boys will be missed by everyone and forgotten by no one. Rest in peace Johnny and Matty. #13 #21."
The entire hockey community has been rocked by the tragic events as fans of the Columbus Blue Jackets and Calgary Flames — the two NHL teams that Johnny played for — have set up memorials outside of their respective arenas.
NHL legend Jaromir Jagr is the latest to reflect on Gaudreau's life, sharing a clip of his last goal in the NHL, which was assisted by Johnny.
-I honestly never thought I'd write a text like this to a post. Yea that was my last NHL goal Yes, that was a pretty nice goal. Yes, it was a beautiful pass above all. Unfortunately, life can sometimes be incredibly cruel. Thank you Johnny Gaudreau for being there and giving hope to all the guys with your incredible performances that though they are not the biggest and toughest, they can succeed at the NHL world-class just like you did. My condolences to the whole family. R.I.P. to you and your brother.
