Domi, a JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) National Ambassador, took part in the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes Sunday morning at Seton Park.

Despite a gloomy day in the Toronto area Sunday, Toronto Maple Leafs forward Max Domi brought a glimmer of hope as an inspiration for young athletes living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) at the Juvenile Diabetes Walk to Cure Diabetes held at Seton Park.

Domi, a National Ambassador for the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), was pictured by the Toronto Sun’s Lance Hornby participating in the event with plenty of enthusiastic fans, many of whom were excited to meet Domi, who has battled the disease throughout his career.

According to the foundation’s website, 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of JDRF Canada and aims to raise awareness by changing the future of everyone living with type 1 diabetes. Domi, seen having heartfelt one-on-one conversations with the children, has been open about his journey with type 1 diabetes throughout his career – something he’s lived with since he was 12 years old.

In fact, the forward published his own book discussing how he manages the day-to-day as a professional athlete in October of 2019, titled “No Days Off: My Life with Type 1 Diabetes and Journey to the NHL,” with a portion of proceeds from the sale of this book being donated to JDRF – the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes research.

In addition to his presence at the walk, Hornby mentioned that the pending unrestricted free agent expressed he would be “pumped to be on a Craig-Berube coached team,” adding that “they’ve spoken already but that depends on contract talks.”

Ever since Domi joined the Leafs in July of 2023 on a one-year $3 million contract, he has been a welcoming addition to the roster, loved by fans alike. His unwavering passion mixed with his tenacious playstyle would certainly fit the brand of hockey newly appointed head coach Berube is in search of.

When discussing the possibility of re-signing with Toronto this summer at the team’s end-of-season media availability, Domi stated without hesitation “Absolutely. I think this team has everything it takes to do something special and I would love to help them do that.” Although this comment was made before the change behind the bench, he seems just as enthusiastic about re-upping with the Leafs.

It was reported by The Athletic’s Pierre Lebrun on Tuesday that both the player and management want to get a deal in place for him to remain a Maple Leaf. General manager Brad Treliving expressed his interest in retaining the veteran forward with conversations already beginning to take place with his agent Judd Moldaver, but no numbers have been put forward yet.

Domi scored 9 goals and added 39 assists in the 2023-24 regular season – tallying a total of 47 points in 80 games. In the postseason, he added another goal and three assists for four points in seven games.
