Maple Leafs Officially Call Up Dennis Hildeby From the Marlies, Joins Team for Practice

With goaltender Ilya Samsonov struggling this season, the Toronto Maple Leafs have called up the 22-year-old Swedish goaltender.

Joseph Woll was on a roll but now the Toronto Maple Leafs will be without him for the next little while. What does this mean for Ilya Samsonov?

Dennis Hildeby is up with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The club called up the 22-year-old Swedish goaltender prospect far earlier than they would have liked. But with Ilya Samsonov struggling in his second season with the Maple Leafs and Joseph Woll out with a high-ankle injury, the club was left with little choice but the bring the next man up.

The Maple Leafs placed Samsonov on waivers with reports that the goaltender will continue to practice in Toronto and work on his game while the team jets off to California for a three-game road trip.

Martin Jones is expected to get the majority of games this week, while Hildeby could make his NHL debut in one of the team's games in Southern California.

Samsonov is 5-2-6 this season with an .862 save percentage. He has struggled after beginning this season as the presumptive No. 1 goaltender in Toronto.

Woll has performed well and at times has taken the No. 1 goaltending duties this season, but he suffered a high-ankle sprain on Dec. 7 in a game against the Ottawa Senators and his return appears to be at least a month away.

Drafted by the Maple Leafs in the fourth round (122nd overall) in the 2022 NHL Draft, the Swedish goaltender has posted a 7-5-3 record with a .919 save percentage in his first season with the Toronto Marlies.
