Team Canada’s pursuit of a 21st gold medal at the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship took an unexpected detour Friday in Ottawa, as they fell 3-2 to Latvia in a dramatic eight-round shootout.
Despite outshooting their opponents 55-22 over 65 minutes, the Canadians struggled to capitalize on their chances, succumbing to one of the biggest upsets in tournament history.
Latvia’s Eriks Mateiko scored the lone goal of the shootout, sealing a monumental victory for the underdog nation. Canada, which entered the matchup with a flawless 4-0 record and a lopsided 41-4 combined score against Latvia in their World Juniors history, was left searching for answers.
Just a year ago, Canada defeated Latvia 10-0.
One of the few bright spots for Canada was Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan. Leading all Canadian forwards in ice time with 20:12, Cowan continued his strong tournament performance, assisting on a third-period goal by Calum Ritchie that briefly put Canada ahead 2-1.
The 19-year-old made a slick cross-ice pass, threading the puck on the tape of Ritchie who blasted a one-timer into the back of the net.
Cowan, a 2023 first-round pick (28th overall), also had a chance to contribute in the shootout but was unable to convert his attempt. Despite the missed opportunity, Cowan has recorded at least one point in each of Canada’s preliminary games – scoring in the team’s opening round game on Boxing Day against Finland.
For the Mount Brydges, Ontario native, the loss carries a reminder of last year’s tournament, where Canada was upset by Slovakia and finished fifth, failing to reach the medal round. This year, the stakes feel even higher as Canada aims to avoid a repeat of that disappointment.
Sloppy execution, unnecessary penalties, and a power play that failed to convert key opportunities contributed to the historic defeat. Overall, there was a lack of urgency from the host nation – appearing out of sync and under prepared in spite of their loaded roster.
Cowan and Team Canada’s journey continues, but the road to redemption just became significantly steeper.
