Cowan is getting close to reaching the OHL record set by Doug Gilmour

The Toronto Maple Leafs were primed to make some sort of moves as a couple of players are ready to come off long-term injured reserve.

Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan showed his scoring ability again on Sunday, helping to secure a 2-1 overtime victory for the London Knights against the Owen Sound Attack with an overtime goal.

The forward carried the puck from his own end of the ice before firing home a wrist shot past Attack goaltender Carter George with a minute remaining in the extra frame.

With the goal, the 19-year-old extended his point streak to 46 games, going back to the 2023-24 season. Since returning to the Knights after the Leafs’ training camp, Cowan has scored seven goals and five assists for 12 points in 10 games – with the Knights winning nine of their last ten contests.

Cowan continues to creep closer to Leafs icon Doug Gilmour’s 55-game point streak, the longest in OHL history that spanned from October 19, 1982 to February 27, 1983. His 46-game point streak ranks second behind Alexander Radulov, who secured a point in 50 consecutive games with the Quebec Remparts in the 2005-06 season.

Last season, the 'Cowboy' had no shortage of milestones. The forward won the Ontario Hockey League’s Red Tilson Trophy for the Most Outstanding Player after his career-high 96 points in 54 regular season games, surpassing his 53-point total in 2022-23.

He also led the Knights to an OHL championship (J. Ross Robertson Cup), won the Wayne Gretzky 99 Award for being named OHL Playoff MVP, and made the CHL First All-Star Team last season. Cowan was also a dominant force in leading London to the Memorial Cup Final, where he led the four-team round-robin tournament with eight points (3G, 5A).

The Mount Brydges, Ontario, native was drafted in the first round (28th overall) by the Leafs in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft and signed a three-year, entry-level contract with an annual average value of $904,667 on August 11, 2023.

Dominating the junior hockey scene, he continues to cement his status as one of the OHL's premier players.
