Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan inched closer to the OHL’s record point streak in consecutive regular season games on Friday night. The 19-year-old scored two power-play goals, hitting the 50-game mark, which draws back to the 2023-24 season, in a 5-3 win against the Sarnia Sting.
He matches Alexander Radulov, who also secured a point in 50 consecutive games with the Quebec Remparts in the 2005-06 season, and ties him for the longest in the CHL since 2000.
The record belongs to Leafs icon Doug Gilmour, who registered a 55-game point streak with the 1982-83 Cornwall Royals, the longest in OHL history that spanned from October 19, 1982, to February 27, 1983.
The ‘Cowboy’ got on the scoresheet for the first time in Sarnia when he tied the game at 1-1 with a power-play marker just under five minutes into the opening frame.
Given another opportunity with the man advantage in the second period, Cowan buried a one-timer for his second power-play strike of the game - evening the contest once again. Since returning from Maple Leafs’ training camp, Cowan has scored 12 goals, seven assists, and 19 points in 14 games – picking up from where he left off in the spring.
Collecting two goals on the night, Cowan earned the second star of the game.
With the help of Cowan’s heroics, the Knights have now won 10 straight games and sit four points out of first place in the OHL – which is where the club finished in the 2023-24 season. Eventually, the Knights cruised to an OHL championship (J. Ross Robertson Cup) and a Memorial Cup Final appearance.
The forward also racked up plenty of personal accolades and achievements, winning the Ontario Hockey League’s Red Tilson Trophy for the Most Outstanding Player, the Wayne Gretzky 99 Award for being named OHL Playoff MVP, and making the CHL First All-Star Team last season.
The Mount Brydges, Ontario, native was drafted in the first round (28th overall) by the Leafs in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft and signed a three-year, entry-level contract with an annual average value of $904,667 on August 11, 2023.
As he continues to approach history, he has a chance to surpass Gilmour in the process, putting a bow on a memorable junior career.
