The Maple Leafs roster has been reduced to 21 players following the clearing of the forward.
Toronto Maple Leafs forward Bo Groulx has cleared waivers on Tuesday.
Thirty-one other NHL club had an opportunity to claim the forward, but passed on the chance. Immediately after clearing, the Leafs sent Groulx down to the Toronto Marlies.
Groulx won a roster spot with the Maple Leafs out of training camp. He played in seven games but did not register a point while averaging 8:03 of ice time. The player was taken out of the lineup when Dakota Joshua was activated from long-term injured reserve and made his season debut in a 4-2 win against the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday.
Groulx made an impression on the Leafs late last season, posting three goals and five points in 13 games. To keep him eligible for the Toronto Marlies playoff run, they sent him down before he lost eligibility. That proved to be a smart call. Groulx had eight goals and six assists in 23 playoff games, helping the Marlies win the 2026 Calder Cup.
The Leafs could have kept Groulx on the roster, but with John Tavares upgraded to day-to-day with a lower-body injury, it's clear Toronto is looking to make room on the active roster. They are down to 21 players out of a maximum of 23. Tavares' activation later in the week could bring that to 22. With the Leafs having back-to-back games this weekend against the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday and New Jersey Devils on Sunday, they could set aside an additional roster spot for Artur Akhtyamov to serve as a backup to goalies Sergei Bobrovsky and Anthony Stolarz this weekend, giving the later two goalies a night off, each.
