Mats Sundin to Join Maple Leafs Staff Dinner as Part of Day Off Plans in Stockholm, Sweden on Thursday

The Maple Leafs have a mandatory day off on Thursday and the players plan to do some sightseeing around Stockholm, Sweden.

The Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman has struggled through his first 13 games of the season. Head coach Sheldon Keefe says the player is injured and working through some things.

STOCKHOLM — Former Toronto Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin was on hand when he and current members of the team took in the screening of Borje, a documentary about the former Leaf and Hockey Hall of Famer Borje Salming.

On Thursday, Maple Leafs staff will have Sundin join them in a dinner as part of the team's plans for their day off from the rink on Thursday.

"I did see his name and thought he’d be involved in some things, which I'm excited about," Maple Leafs head coach said following the team's practice at Hovet Arena on Thursday. "It’s great to have guys like him around. Anytime our alums come around, it’s very good. Certainly his status in his home country, I think is terrific."

Max Domi has a particularly close relationship with Sundin as both Mats and Domi's father, Tie, were longtime teammates as members of the Maple Leafs.

Max has referred to Mats as "like an uncle" to him on numerous occasions and has worn Sundin's No. 13 as a member of other teams when he's had the chance.

Domi said he's spoken to Sundin on the phone and plans to meet up with Sundin and his family at some point on the trip.

The players kept pretty quiet on their plans for the trip, particularly William Nylander, who has drawn a lot of attention on the trip.

But Domi did reveal that the team plans on spending some time checking out the city and sightseeing on Thursday.

With so many days between games, it's unusual for the Maple Leafs to take the day off before a game but Keefe explained that the day off was mandatory as part of the event.

The Maple Leafs will take on the Detroit Red Wings on Friday and the Minnesota Wild on Sunday as part of the 2023 NHL Global Series in Stockholm, Sweden.
