The Hockey Hall of Fame Committee will unveil their nominees on Tuesday afternoon but the chances of a couple of former Leafs getting the nod will be slim.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Hockey Hall of Fame will formally announce the class of inductees for 2024 and there were some well-deserving names on the list.
Pavel Datsyuk and Shea Weber were the big names that dominated the lists as the players got into the Hall in their first year of eligibility. Jeremy Roenick got his due after being on the ballot since 2012. Natalie Darwitz and Krissy Wendell-Pohl got in in the women's category, while David Poile and Colin Campbell were both selected in the builders' category.
But former Toronto Maple Leafs Alex Mogilny and Curtis Joseph were left off the list yet again, despite their credentials.
You can understand putting Datsyuk and Weber in. Both players put up elite numbers and deserved to go in on their first year of eligibility. But when you compare Roenick to Mogilny it doesn't make any sense.
With 1,032 points in 990 NHL games, Mogilny's 1.04 points per game trumps that of Roenick's 0.89. Stanley Cup victories, an important metric that virtually clinches any borderline candidate of getting into the Hall, is in Mogilny's favor as well. He won a Stanley Cup with the New Jersey Devils in 2000 while JR never got one. And if you think that the Cup victories don't matter, ask Tom Barrasso and Mike Vernon, who got in as part of the 2023 Hall of Fame Class.
A committee of 18 voters decided on who gets into the Hall and of all the candidates that are brought forward every year, 14 of them have to say yes. There is no transparency as to who voted for what and the most recent rounds of voting suggest there should be.
Curtis Joseph, the former Maple Leafs goaltender who sits all-time in victories with 454 also didn't get in.
At this point, there needs to be a reason demonstrated why Mogilny isn't getting to the Hall. The longer this continues, the more embarrassing this looks for the sport.
