Liljegren was back at practice after leaving in the second period of Toronto's 3-2 overtime loss to the Nashville Predators
Timothy Liljegren's status going into Tuesday's game against the Los Angeles Kings was the biggest question going into the Toronto Maple Leafs' practice on Monday. But the Swedish defenseman emerged from the locker room and took part in regular reps on a pairing with defenseman Mark Giordano.
"We didn't know how that one was going to go," Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe said of Liljegren's initial status. "It settled down pretty quickly and it became more of a muscle spasm situation than damage done."
Liljegren was knocked out of Toronto's 3-2 overtime loss to the Nashville Predators on Sunday when he took a hit along the end boards from Preds forward Yakov Trenin.
Keefe says he hadn't got a report on how Liljegren got through the practice by the time we spoke to him on Monday afternoon.
"It's certainly nice to know that we we're going to have him," Keefe said.
The Leafs said that Liljegren sustained an upper-body injury during Saturday's game.
The team practiced with the same lines and defense pairs during their Monday skating session,
McCabe will miss his second consecutive game with a groin injury sustained against the Dallas Stars on Thursday.
"The plan is to get him up and running (for practice) mid-week," Keefe said.
William Lagesson made his Maple Leafs debut on Saturday on a defensive pair with fellow Swede John Klingberg. Both players are from Gothenburg, Sweden and Keefe had to rely on Lagesson more than he expected to on Saturday once Liljegren left the game.
"He's guy is also really good at reading the game," Klingberg said of Lagesson. You might not see a lot of offense all the time from him, but I think he’s on the right spot on the ice all the time offensively and defensively.
"What he's really good at is the ice battles. He sees ice and wins his battle all the time."
Lagesson spent last season with the Chicago Wolves of the AHL. Toronto signed the defenseman to a one-year, two-way deal on July 1. The defenseman logged 10:56 in his season debut.
