It got ugly in a hurry.
Once it became evident that the Toronto Maple Leafs weren't going to match the Florida Panthers' effort in Game 7, a scorned fan base took out their frustrations on their beloved team.
Fans threw jerseys on the ice, much like they did following a similar effort in Game 5. But it got uglier as debris and other liquids poured onto the ice, forcing public address announcer Mike Ross to warn that fans throwing objects would be ejected and possibly face criminal penalties.
Perhaps it was the lack of follow-through after an embarrassing loss in Game 5, but it was more likely do to a fanbase that their team lost its sixth consecutive Game 7 matchup and seventh consecutive winner-take-all game dating back to 2013.
Maple Leafs Fans Toss Jerseys Onto The Ice During Game 5 Debacle Against Panthers At Scotiabank Arena
There was supposed to be a strong pushback on home ice from the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 5 after dropping two straight to the Florida Panthers, evening up the second-round series. Instead, it turned into one of the most humiliating playoff performances in the ‘Core Four’ era, and the frustration boiled over from the club’s fans accordingly.
Maple Leafs forward John Tavares perhaps summed it up the best by demonstrating a popular club marketing word in reacting to what he saw and felt on the ice.
"Passion is a significant word amongst this fanbase, and it's really special, you feel their disappointment," he said. " It's tough. Never want to see the jerseys on the ice, but we just didn't play well enough."
Toward the end of Toronto's 6-1 loss to the Panthers, fans booed Mitch Marner every time he touched the puck. The pending unrestricted free agent understood it, given the circumstances.
"I mean, you feel for it. I mean, I'm feeling the same way," he said. "It's sad. It's heartbreaking. It's something you don't enjoy. We're not happy with that outcome either."
Perhaps the most disappointing reaction of all came from team captain Auston Matthews, who said the Panthers were "hungrier" than they were when it mattered most. When he was asked about his thoughts to seeing a jersey with his name on the ice, he didn't have the words.
"It’s tough to kind of gather thoughts on all that so quickly after the game," he said. "I think you look back on training camp, just all the work you put in to get yourself to this point, it’s very frustrating, obviously. For us, as well as them included. It’s tough to gather your thoughts right away."
For many fans, it's not that the Leafs didn't get the job done but how they went about their efforts. There are a lot of questions heading into the offseason for the Maple Leafs from the very top of the management chain to its core.
But as the the Leafs' salute to the crowd at the end of the game was met with boos, the fans gave their answer on what they want...That's real change.
