Ilya Samsonov missed Friday’s practice with an illness and his status for the Toronto Maple Leafs game against the Montreal Canadiens is to be determined.

"We'll see how he is throughout the day and into tomorrow and then make a decision (on who starts in goal against the Canadiens) from there."

Samsonov absence was notable, given he wasn't seen on the ice doing any extra work beforehand and the team had just come off a full day off on Thursday.

The 25-year-old has become Toronto's No. 1 goaltender both with his play in the net and the injury issues with Matt Murray. Both players joined the Maple Leafs after the team overhauled their goaltending tandem last season which consisted of starter Jack Campbell and backup goaltender Petr Mrazek.

Samsonov is 19-6-2 this season. His .918 save percentage has him inside the NHL's top 10. With a  2.31 goals-against average, he is tied for fifth among qualified goaltenders.

The Russian goaltender signed a one-year, $1.8 million contract with the Maple Leafs in the summer. He is a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

Murray last played on Jan. 17 when he surrendered four goals on eight shots against the Florida Panthers. He was scheduled to return on Jan. 27 against the Ottawa Senators. Despite taking part in the warmup, he did not play due to an ankle injury that flared up.

There is no update on when Murray will return. The goaltender is currently on injured reserve.

Joseph Woll was the only goaltender on the Maple Leafs active roster to take part in practice. In the event that Samsonov can't play, Woll would be set to make his second start this season and Toronto would likely call up Erik Kallgren from the Marlies to back him up.

Woll made his season debut on Feb. 11 and made 36 saves on 40 shots in a 4-3 loss the Columbus Blue Jackets. 

"Joe's done a good job for us, both here with us, in the AHL and last season," Keefe said. "I don't think we gave him a chance to be very good the other night with the way we played in front of him."

Woll was expected to make his second start of the season this weekend with Toronto playing games on back-to-back nights. The Leafs visit the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday afternoon.
