The Swedish Hockey League said 9 million SEK ($859,000 USD) was raised for the Borje Salming Foundation in the fight against ALS.

A group of Toronto Maple Leafs alumni and other Tre Kronor hockey legends gathered in Galve, Sweden on Saturday to take part in an alumni game in honor of the late Borje Salming.

The event was held with proceeds going to the Borje Salming Foundation. The Hockey Hall of Famer and Leafs legend passed away in November after a battle with ALS, a rare neurological disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement.

The foundation, established in the legend's honor has Nicklas Lidstrom on its board. Last month, Rasmus Sandin announced on his Instagram that he was joining the foundation as an ambassador.

The event saw Maple Leafs alumni Mats Sundin, Rick Vaive, Alex Steen, Mikael Renberg and others take part. Longtime teammate of Salming, Darryl Sittler acted as a coach.

"You feel glad for Borje because everyone is showing so much support, so it's huge," Maple Leafs forward Pierre Engvall said of the tribute.

Before the game took place, Salming's jersey was raised to the rafters and a tribute video brought the family and friends of the legends to tears.

According to the Swedish Hockey League, the event raised 9 million SEK ($859,000 USD) for the foundation.
