SEATTLE — Mark Giordano is the all-time NHL blocked shots king.
The Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman blocked a Carson Soucy shot in the second period to pick up his 2,045 blocked shot to set the all-time NHL record since the stat was officially tracked in 2005-06.
"It's not a glamorous record by anybody any means, but I think it speaks to playing a long time, playing hard and playing the right way so I don't take it too lightly," Giordano said.
The Maple Leafs defenseman tied the record, which was previously held by former Calgary Flames teammate Kris Russell, on Friday in a 2-1 win against the Minnesota Wild.
The 39-year-old defenseman returned to Climate Pledge Arena for the first time since the Maple Leafs acquired him last year before the NHL trade deadline. He made his impact felt in the first period when he tied the game 1-1 less than a minute after Seattle's Vince Dunn opened the scoring.
Giordano's goal was the first of five unanswered for Toronto in a 5-1 victory against the Kraken on Sunday. He finished the game with two blocked shots, but the goal will be remembered for helping get the team back on track after what looked like a difficult opening few minutes.
"Gio settled us down with his goal," Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe said. "Maybe it's good fortune for his time spent here, I don't know, but it certainly settled us down, for sure."
Giordano was the first captain of the sophomore franchise. During the first period of the game, the Kraken aired a tribute video for their former captain.
The Kraken have not named a new captain since Giordano's departure.
