VANCOUVER — When the Toronto Maple Leafs began their current five-game road trip in Seattle, Mark Giordano was just one blocked shot away from becoming the all-time shots blocked leader since the stat was officially tracked in 2005-06.
Shortly after the team got through Friday's trade deadline, Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas assembled team staff to present Giordano with a custom shield.
"This is awesome and obvious I do whatever it takes to win it," Giordano said to his team when accepting the team-made award. "I know everyone's the same, so thanks, boys."
The shield features his No. 55 which he wears with the Maple Leafs, along with his team's logo in the upper-middle portion. The Calgary Flames and Seattle Kraken logos are also featured for his time spent with those franchises.
The 39-year-old Giordano has been a staple of the team's defense this season. At times, he's been asked to play more as other core players went down earlier in the season with injuries. The addition of defensemen Jake McCabe, Luke Scheen and Erik Gustafsson should also help with the team's depth as the season progresses.
Giordano has played in all 62 games this season and has four goals and 18 assists. He has averaged 19:26 of ice time.
