Maple Leafs Prospect Ty Voit Aspires for Further Development

After a third development camp with the Leafs, The 20-year-old forward is ready to make a splash with the Toronto Marlies.

Ryan O’Reilly and Luke Schenn were just a couple of Maple Leafs who all found new hopes when free agency opened in July. Here’s a breakdown of who went where.

If there's anyone who seems ready for their first pro season in the Maple Leafs organization, it's Ty Voit.

Voit, a fifth-round draft pick (153rd overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft, is participating in his third development camp with the Maple Leafs and is excited for the next step in his hockey career.

The 20-year-old, in his final OHL season, put up spectacular numbers with the Sting.

Voit's 105 points (24 goals, 81 assists) in 67 games put him second among skaters for most points in the OHL last season. His 81 assists led the league in that category.

He followed that successful regular season up with 16 points (three goals, 13 assists) in 16 playoff games.

"I think I was definitely happy with the step I took this year," Voit said at Maple Leafs development camp. "No one's completely happy with where they're at, right?

"There's more places I want to get with my game, way, way more places I want to get with my game. So, it was all in my mind but I'm definitely happy with the strides I took this year. I'm just trying to build off of those for the years coming up."

Voit is entering his first season of professional hockey this fall with the Toronto Marlies. For him, it's going to be a brand new league, but it's also going to be a bigger game.

Standing at only five-foot-10 and weighing 161 pounds, there's going to need to be a lot of work from him in the weight room, and he understands that.

"It's the biggest thing for me every summer," Voit said. "I'm just in the gym, I'm trying to get better, trying to get bigger because that's going to be the biggest focus point of my career moving forward."

Players who are on the smaller side aren't always going to fill out quickly. It might not come until a year or two down the road.

However, with Voit, he's already ahead of the game. The 20-year-old has been working on, not only just gaining muscle, but understanding how to be an effective player at the pro level when you don't have that size.

"I'd say being able to use my body a little bit to push off of guys," he said. "Not getting flat-footed as much. I find that maybe last year, I'd take a little bump and then lose my footing a little bit, kind of figure out where I'm going.

"But now, I know how to take that contact, I know where I'm going after it, I know I'm accelerating into the spot."

It's been two years since the 20-year-old was drafted by the Maple Leafs. And although he hasn't played a game inside the organization, Voit still understands what it's like to be a part of the Maple Leafs.

"I guess just how top-tier it is," he said of what's stood out about the Maple Leafs organization. "You go anywhere, you see all these NHL teams, but then you come here and it's just like, not a smack in the face but eye-opening.

"You kind of see how big it really is, and kind of the biggest part of the hockey world, so it's really cool to see."

For the rest of the summer, Voit says he'll spend some time in Toronto, Pittsburgh with his family and to be home, and Florida, to train.

And he understands exactly what's needed of him before he returns to Toronto in the fall for his first professional season with the Marlies.

"It's the strength, it's in the gym. That's the biggest thing for me," Voit said. "Everything on the ice has been going somewhat smoothly for me.

"Obviously, there's tons of stuff I want to work on out there too, but the biggest thing that I just know for a fact, it's just going to be me being able to put on that weight and be able to take it out there."
