The club acquired the Boston Bruins' first-round draft pick on Feb. 28 when they acquired the selection along with defenseman Erik Gustafsson in a trade with the Washington Capital in exchange for defenseman Rasmus Sandin.

The Capitals originally acquired the pick as part of a three-team trade that saw defenseman Dmitry Orlov and forward Garnet Hathaway become Bruins as part of a three-team trade just five days prior.

The Maple Leafs do not own their own first-round pick as they traded it to the St. Louis Blues as part of a package that brought forwards Ryan O'Reilly and Noel Acciari to Toronto.

The Bruins had the best record in the NHL last season and the highest they would have been able to select is 28th. Selections 29-32 are reserved for the conference finalists, Stanley Cup finalist, and champion.

The Panthers stunned the Presidents' Trophy-winning Bruins in seven games to advance to the second round of the NHL playoffs where they will take on the Maple Leafs, who defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games.

The Maple Leafs didn't have a first-round pick last year after they traded down from the 25th to the 38th selection to move goaltender Petr Mrazek to the Chicago Blackhawks. Toronto selected forward prospect Fraser Minten with the 38th selection at the 2022 NHL Draft.
