During his visit to Canada, U.S. President Joe Biden address the Canadian Parliament to which he said he likes all Canadian hockey teams, except for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Joe Biden couldn’t resist.
The U.S. President made his first visit to Canada since taking the country’s highest office and in his speech to Canadian Parliament, he took a playful jab at the Toronto Maple Leafs.
“I like all of your (hockey) teams, except the Leafs,” Biden said.
The statement drew a wide reaction including from some Leafs-hating MPs who gave him a standing ovation. Some, presumably Toronto-based MPs jeered.
“I’ll tell your why. They beat the (Philadelphia) Flyers that’s why,” Biden explained. “I married a Philly girl and if I didn’t say that I’d be sleeping alone fellas. I like you a lot but not that much.”
Biden’s wife, Jill, was born in Hammonton, New Jersey, not too far from the metropolitan Philadelphia area.
Usually a typical regular season loss isn’t enough to generate that kind of ire toward another NHL club, but it’s clear Biden and his people knew the comment would be quite popular.
It’s quite possibly the greatest hockey reference from a former U.S. president since Barack Obama invited the Pittsburgh Penguins to the White House to announce that Phil Kessel is a Stanley Cup champion.
