The Arizona Coyotes suffered a tough 5-2 at the hands of the Winnipeg Jets as fatigue and injuries seemed to play a major factor.
Tonight marked the Coyotes final matchup in what has been a long five-game road trip.
While Arizona actually was playing pretty good hockey through the road trip winning two of the first four games, injuries have been a problem. In just these few games on the road, the Coyotes lost Jack McBain, Juuso Välimäki and Barrett Hayton due to injuries.
As a result, the Coyotes were pretty shorthanded going into a matchup against a red hot Jets team that were on a two game winning streak.
Matias Maccelli opened up the scoring 14:53 seconds into the first period but the Coyotes lead didn’t last long. Winnipeg scored two goals in the span of a minute at the end of the first period including a fluky goal that took a weird bounce past Karel Vejmelka.
Matt Dumba got his first goal since Arizona’s opening night matchup in New Jersey to tie the game but that would be the final time the Coyotes got on the scoresheet.
The Jets would go on to score three unanswered goals to snatch their second victory against Arizona.
Throughout the latter part of this game, the Coyotes just failed to generate any sort of offense and looked tired at times which is understandable due to their constant traveling over the past week.
While the Coyotes have responded generally well to all of these recent injuries, tonight it was apparent that they were missing some key pieces.
Replacing Hayton will not be an easy task for Arizona but they will have to find a way to balance out the lineup as he will be out for the next 4-6 weeks and can’t afford to keep dropping games during that time span.
The Coyotes return home on Monday night to take on the Los Angeles Kings.
