The Arizona Coyotes gloomy days continue as they suffered a 4-1 defeat to the Winnipeg Jets, marking their third consecutive loss.
The Coyotes were coming off losses to the Florida Panthers and New York islanders where they just did not look like the same tough and gritty team that we have been accustomed to seeing.
In the first period Winnipeg bombarded Arizona in shots, leading 15-4 in that category while taking a 1-0 lead from a Vladislav goal Namestnikov caused by a sloppy defensive zone turnover.
Despite Nick Schmaltz scoring a goal in the second period, the tide of this game didn’t really shift at all.
Nikolaj Ehlers and Cole Perfetti both were able to get on the board and the Jets were just imposing their will, hence the Coyotes single digit shot total after 40 minutes of play.
Arizona’s highlight of the night came in the third period when Dylan Guenther scored a goal in his first game since getting called-up from the AHL, but other than that there wasn’t much to be excited about.
Following the game, coach André Tourigny described his team's performance as ‘out of character,’ a statement that is spot on.
The Coyotes were outplayed in every aspect. The Jets were more physical, faster and better defensively.
Arizona had trouble generating offense all night and it seemed they played in their own zone for practically the entire game.
Turnovers also continue to be a problem for the Coyotes. This team constantly puts themselves in holes early on by committing careless turnovers that ultimately lead to goals.
Against talented teams like the Jets, Panthers and Islanders, sloppy play defensively is just a recipe for disaster and most of the time they won’t be able to climb themselves back from multi-goal deficits.
While the Coyotes have been on a couple losing streaks this season, this is arguably the most adversity they have faced all year.
With this three game losing streak, the Coyotes have already dropped out of a wild card spot in the Western Conference and will need to look themselves in the mirror and find their identity again in order to get back into a playoff position.
It does not get any easier for the Coyotes. The Boston Bruins are coming into town on Tuesday night in what will be a critical game for boosting morale and getting back on track.
