The Arizona Coyotes face off against the New York Islanders in their third game of the season.
- Karel Vejmelka settling in early with two big stops on Brock Nelson. If the Coyotes can get the same Vejmelka from opening night that would be huge.
- Sean Durzi has a great shot from the blue line but he just showed his ability to drive to the net. He got a good scoring opportunity there. It's nice to being seeing defencemen try to get some offense going.
- Huge chance for the Coyotes to strike on this four-minute power play.
- The Coyotes power play looked a little but flat. Couldn't really get anything going through all four minutes. Big missed opportunity to get on the scoring sheet.
- Clayton Keller commits his first penalty. Huge blow for the Coyotes as this happened basically right after their four-minute power play expired.
- Big time penalty kill by the Coyotes there. Karel Vejmelka stood tall making a big stop and they prevented the Islanders from getting anything going.
- Clayton Keller is really fun to watch with the puck on his stick. His speed plus puck handling skills make him hard to stop while in the other team's zone.
- The Coyotes have looked strong defensively through the latter half of this period.
- The Islanders had a couple great chances to over the last couple minutes of the period but Karel Vejmelka has continued to come up clutch and the score remains 0-0 at the end of the first.
First period summery: At the end of the first period, the game remains scoreless. The Coyotes had an opportunity to make something happen early on in the period with a four-minute power play but they were unable to capitalize. While Arizona had their moments, the Islanders dominated for most of the period as they currently lead 10-3 in shots. Goaltender Karel Vejmelka helped keep the Coyotes in the game. Clayton Keller has been all over the ice to start the game so he is a player to watch out for through the rest of this contest.
- The Coyotes first line of Clayton Keller, Nick Schmaltz and Barrett Hayton set the tone getting a flurry of chances to start the period.
- The commentators continue to talk about the Islanders physical play. They are right, the Islanders to play a physical brand of hockey and the Coyotes have to match that level.
- Karel Vejmelka turns the puck over leading to a Barrett Hayton slashing penalty.
- Right as the power play begins Mathew Barzal rips the puck for a GOAL. It is now 1-0 Islanders. Tough break for the Coyotes as their shorthanded struggles continue.
- The Coyotes down 1-0 now go to the power play. Huge opportunity to get back in this game.
- The Coyotes were unable to score on their power play. The power play seems to be a little bit of an issue for Arizona to start the season. They need to figure out how to be more creative on the man-advantage.
- Tough offensive zone penalty by Carcone. The Islanders go back to the power play.
- Huge penalty kill for the Coyotes. They now need to build off this and generate some offense, something they have really failed to do this period.
- Alexander Romanov delivered a late hit on Alexander Kerfoot and Jason Zucker did not like the hit. Zucker went after Romanov and had a few words for him. Love how Zucker stood up for his teammate there. Really stepping up as a leader.
- Both Romanov and Zucker go to the box.
- Matt Dumba looks a little shooken up after getting an elbow to the face. He is still sitting on the bench getting cleaned up.
- The score remains 1-0 for the Islanders at the end of period two
Second period summery: The Coyotes did not have their best period by any means. Arizona trailed 14-4 in shots on net while they were unable to get anything going offensively. Mathew Barzal scored the game's lone goal on the power play. The Islanders physical brand of hockey seems to be in full affect. Even with the Coyotes slow play thus far, it's just 1-0 and the game is still wide open going into the third period.
- The Coyotes are starting the third period as they ended the second. New York is continuing to dominate and pressure Karel Vejmelka.
- Logan Cooley just helped generate a great scoring chance. He uses his speed so well and the Coyotes will certainly need him if they want to rally back.
-The Coyotes now have Logan Cooley and Jason Zucker playing with Matias Maccelli. It seems to be working well.
- Arizona is playing with a lot more aggression this period. Loving the way this team is responding.
- Alexander Kerfoot may have changed lines but he is having is best game of the season.
- The Coyotes just have a few minutes to figure things out and tie this game. They are looking better but can't seem to capitalize on these chances.
- The Coyotes should pull the goalie at around the 2:00 minute mark.
- The islanders putting on some pressure through these last couple of minutes. The Coyotes need to get some offensive zone time, just under three minutes left.
-Arizona pulls their goalie at the 1:58 mark.
- The Coyotes were unable to get any major scoring chances with the net empty and the Islanders hold on to win 1-0. Tough loss.
Third period summery: The Coyotes had a much better period in the third. They doubled their shots on net from the first two periods and played more aggressive but it still wasn't enough to get past goaltender Ilya Sorokin. Overall, this was probably the Coyotes worst game out of their past three but they ended the contest strong which they can take as a positive going to St. Louis on Thursday.
Final: Islanders 1, Coyotes 0
