On Frozen Frenzy night, it seemed the Utah Hockey Club would be the ones to gorge themselves on goals.
The Ottawa Senators had other ideas.
Behind a 31-save shutout from Anton Forsberg and taking advantage of some opportunities, the Sens (4-2-0) scored four times in nine minutes in the first period in a 4-0 shutout thumping of Utah Tuesday at Delta Center.
Despite the fact Utah (4-2-1) had a heavy advantage in shots, at one point leading 10 to 1, to start the game, it was Ottawa who scored first on a 4-on-4 situation behind Drake Batherson.
That unleashed a flurry of goals, including scores from Claude Giroux and Brady Tkachuk, chasing starter Connor Ingram and silencing a normally boisterous home crowd that then showered their club with boos as the first period horn sounded.
"We had a lot of opportunities," head coach Andre Tourigny said. "I had no problem with our play, except in certain moments where we were not mature."
And for most of the game, Utah did dictate the play.
Tourigny said outside of the third period, where he felt his team was too slow in developing their breakouts, Utah had grade-A chances from the slot and on the power play.
But when Juuso Valimaki hit the crossbar from about 10 feet late in the third period, it was clear it was just one of those nights.
"I don't think we played bad," Tourigny said. "We didn't give them (Ottawa) much, and we (Utah) had a lot. Our forecheck generated a lot of chances."
