With all the uncertainty surrounding the Arizona Coyotes' franchise, is it the right move to trade Clayton Keller?

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports - Should the Coyotes Trade Clayton Keller?

Arizona Coyotes’ All-Star right winger Clayton Keller could be on the trade block this summer.

After the Coyotes’ plan to build a new Sports and Entertainment District was shot down by the people of Tempe, Keller’s representatives Brian and Scott Bartlett reportedly met with the Coyotes to seek clarity about the future according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

Trading Keller would be catastrophic for the franchise and could extend Arizona’s rebuild for many more years.

Keller is still only 24-years-old and is coming off his best season where he had a career high 37 goals, 49 assists and 86 points. At this point, Keller is just starting to reach the peak of his career so why trade him now?

Coyotes’ general manager Bill Armstrong has made so much progress over the past few seasons accumulating young talent including Logan Cooley, Dylan Guenther, Nathan Smith and Conor Geekie. In a matter of just a couple of seasons, all of these prospects will most likely be ready to play in the NHL and are perfect pieces to surround Keller with.

By trading Keller, Armstrong would essentially be erasing all the progress he made and put the Coyotes in a dark place without a superstar player.

Keller is also the perfect kind of player to build a team around in today’s NHL. He is a fast skater, an excellent puck handler and has an absolute rocket of a shot. Having that kind of talent is rare which means the Coyotes have to take advantage while Keller is still producing at this high level instead of shipping him off in the midst of his prime.

Friedman reported on his 32 Thoughts Podcast that despite some uncertainty about the team’s future, Keller never formally requested a trade out of Arizona so there is no rush to get rid of him at all. Plus, Keller still has five years remaining on his eight-year $57.2 million deal and a no-move clause that kicks in on July 1.

Will Keller spend the rest of his career in Arizona, who knows but the organization must make it a priority to ensure he is a Coyote for the foreseeable future.
