The Arizona Coyotes put forward Alex Galchenyuk on unconditional waivers on Thursday.
It really came as a shock since the 29-year-old was signed to a one-year, two-way contract on July 1 but part of the reasoning behind his contract termination has now been revealed.
"An NHL source told ESPN that the Coyotes discovered an "off-ice situation" impacting Galchenyuk that was previously unknown to the team," ESPN's Greg Wyshynski wrote. "The NHLPA said it is reviewing the decision on the behalf of Galchenyuk, who will become an unrestricted free agent again."
The situation surrounding Galchenyuk will be reviewed by the NHLPA according to PHNX Sports' Craig Morgan.
Galchenyuk's future in the NHL as well as findings by the NHLPA are still yet to be determined.
