Barrett Hayton never wanted to leave Utah.

For one tense week, however, that possibility became very real.

After the New Jersey Devils signed the restricted free agent center to a one-year, $4.775 million offer sheet, the Utah Mammoth had seven days to decide whether to match it. They ultimately did, keeping one of their core forwards in Utah for the 2026-27 season.

Speaking publicly about the situation, Hayton admitted the process was stressful, but said the outcome was exactly what he had hoped for all along.

“It was definitely a stressful week and a unique process, but I always wanted to be in Utah. I love Utah. I have a lot of pride in being a Utah Mammoth,” he explained to the Utah Hockey Podcast on Friday.

Hayton acknowledged that he largely stayed out of the contract negotiations, instead leaving the business side to his representatives while focusing on hockey.

“Truthfully, I don’t know the ins and outs of it all that great. I try to focus on playing hockey, and management and agents and all that take care of the rest.”

Although the offer sheet created uncertainty, Hayton said his goal never changed.

“Ultimately, I always wanted to be in Utah. I couldn’t be happier to be back in Utah, be back with the guys.”

The 26-year-old also echoed the organization’s belief that last season ended with more left to accomplish.

“I know it sounds kind of cliche, but I feel like we have unfinished business off last season. We’re hungry, we’re excited, and I couldn’t be happier to be back with thi group of guys.”

The biggest moment came when Utah informed him it would exercise its right to match New Jersey’s offer.

“I was so excited. It was just a ton of relief when they notified me that they’d be matching.”

Hayton said the week between signing the offer sheet and Utah’s decision wasn’t easy, as he stayed in contact with teammates while waiting for the organization’s decision.

“It was obviously a week of talking to my teammates and all that. Finally, when it was all sorted, I was just super excited to be back with them and back in Utah.”

While offer sheets remain rare in the NHL, Hayton understands they’re simply part of the business.

“It’s a business. We’re trying to win a Stanley Cup, and the business is what it is.”

Hayton is coming off his seventh NHL season after recording 10 goals and 15 assists for 25 points in 67 regular-season games. His year was cut short after suffering an upper-body injury that forced him to miss the final 10 games of the regular season and all but one game of Utah’s Stanley Cup Playoff run.

Now healthy and ready for the 2026-27 season, Hayton can shift his full attention back to helping the Mammoth build on what they started — with the organization and teammates he never wanted to leave.
