During the NHL All-Star Draft on Thursday night, Arizona Coyotes forward Clayton Keller was drafted by Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Auston Matthews and artist Justin Bieber.
Keller was selected in the fourth out of nine rounds by Team Matthews.
The other players drafted by Team Matthews include William Nylander, Mitch Marner, Jake Oettinger, Mathew Barzal, Igor Shesterkin, Filip Forsberg, Alex DeBrincat, Vincent Trocheck.
After the draft, Keller opened up about how he enjoyed this unique All-Star format and his thoughts on teaming up with Matthews.
“It was a different experience to years prior. It was cool that they changed it up there and good to be back with Auston. It’s pretty cool,” Keller said.
“We spend a lot of time in the summer hanging out, skating and things like that, so it’s cool to be able to spend some time with him this weekend.”
Matthews also talked about his relationship with Keller and why he ultimately decided to pick him.
“He’s an unbelievable player,” Matthews said. “I spend a lot of time with him in the summers and we like to hang out. We’ll skate and train together. In the summer skates, we always try to play together and have pretty good chemistry, so I really wanted him to be on the team. He’s really slippery, he’s extremely skilled, he shoots it really well, but he's also an elite playmaker and he is having a great season.”
This year’s All-Star game is different as not only was there a draft but four celebrities get to be honorary captains. This adds a unique element to the All-Star festivities.
Bieber is captain along with Matthews. Keller recounted what his favorite Bieber song actually is.
“One that used to play a lot growing up was I think ‘Baby,'” Keller said.
The four All-Star teams are set to start competing on Saturday at 1 PM MT.
