Eric Bolte-USA TODAY Sports - Conor Geekie and Maveric Lamoureux Look to Make Impact at Coyotes Training Camp

For the Arizona Coyotes, the 2022 NHL Draft is mainly remembered for the selection of Logan Cooley with the third overall pick.

However, many forget that the Coyotes had the 11th and 29th pick in the first round where they selected forward Conor Geekie and defenseman Maveric Lamoureux.

Both Geekie and Lamoureux participated in the Rookie Faceoff this past weekend in Las Vegas and are with the Coyotes for training camp.

Geekie is coming off of a fantastic season in the WHL with Winnipeg ice tallying 35 goals, 42 assists and 77 points in 66 games. The 19-year-old is determined to show that he does indeed belong with the rest of the Coyotes established players and is capable of playing at a professional level.

“I think, just staying here as long as I can, I think that's a big goal,” Geekie said. As long as I can be where I want to be and make it as hard as I can for them to say no.”

On Friday the Coyotes practiced their power play pairing Geekie with Josh Doan, Jan Jeník, John Leonard and Maksymilian Szuber.

Geekie’s high hockey IQ and strong offensive abilities are huge reasons why the Coyotes decided to take him in the first round.

He put his offensive skills on display during the Rookie Faceoff scoring three goals to go along with three assists and six points. Geekie will have an opportunity to continue his point surge through the preseason and prove even further what he is truly capable of.

Lamoureux was actually injured last year during training camp as he underwent shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum and remove some bone pieces. Now that he is finally on the ice for the Coyotes, Lamoureux is taking nothing for granted.

“It feels amazing, first time skating in an NHL camp, first time being with all those guys,” Lamoureux said. “I had the chance to at least watch last year and learn from them, but now I like finally get to practice and be on the ice with them, it's just amazing.”

The 19-year-old played with the Drummondville Voltigeurs of the QMJHL last year where he had five goals, 14 assists and 19 points in 35 games.

Standing at 6-foot-7, Lamoureux really has all the tools to be a really impactful defenseman for the Coyotes in the future.

“Like you said I’m a big defenseman also being mobile for my size,” Lamoureux said. “I’ll also be really good defensively. I can join the rush and be a good passer. I would say I’m a good, big two-way defenseman.”

Time will tell what sort of role Geekie and Lamoureux have for the Coyotes in the future but it will be interesting to watch them both play through the team’s training camp and preseason.
