Center Conor Geekie is coming into the Arizona Coyotes prospect development camp with something more to prove.
The 19-year-old was drafted with the 11th overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft by the Coyotes. This past season, Geekie played for the Winnipeg Ice of the Western Hockey League where he had 35 goals, 42 assists and 77 points in 66 games. He played even better during the playoffs for the Ice as he tallied six goals, 11 assists and 17 points in just 19 games.
Geekie feels that playing in the WHL last year helped him improve upon some aspects of his game which will make him be a more complete player going forward.
“I think my skating felt a lot better,” Geekie said. “I think it's one noticeable thing that you can kind of see on the ice…”
Going into his second summer in Arizona for development camp, Geekie is more comfortable and has created strong bonds with some of the other prospects and people around the Coyotes organization.
“I think just with the comfort level and everything, you know a lot of the guys, you know most of the staff,” Geekie said. “It's just creating that bond last year and then you move in here and everything just seems to kind of fit a little better than it did.”
Despite the strides that Geekie has already made in his game over the past year, he is using this week at development camp to grow even more and continue to build his game into one that will translate to fast-paced hockey games.
“I think skating of course is always number one for me,” Geekie said on what he is looking to improve and work on this week. “I think putting work in the gym and trying to get more powerful a lot quicker and just translate that all on the ice.”
Coyotes fans should expect to see a lot more of Geekie in the future.
