The Arizona Coyotes made a big roster move as they continue to deal with a multitude of injuries.
Troy Stecher will be out 4-6 weeks with a lower-body injury while Matt Dumba went down with an upper-body injury on Thursday night and his status is still unclear.
In response to all of this, the Coyotes called up their 2019 first-round pick Victor Söderström.
Söderström is a highly regarded prospect for Arizona, but is still yet to crack a full-time spot in the NHL.
The 22-year-old has played 50 games for the Coyotes through the past three seasons where he has one goal, 10 assists and 11 points.
Söderström has been solid for the Roadrunners this year. He’s tallied eight goals, 13 assists and 21 points in 38 games.
With all of these injuries defensively, this is Söderström’s chance to show what he is capable of and try to earn a spot with the Coyotes permanently.
It’s been a very up and down road for Söderström through the past few years, but he still clearly has the potential to be a great player.
Coach André Tourigny did not go into any detail on Monday night regarding Dumba’s injury, so the severity of his situation is still a mystery.
An opportunity is an opportunity though and similar to Guenther, if Söderström is able to crack the lineup and play well over the course of this short span, he could very well stay with the team moving forward.
Regardless of the amount of time he stays in the NHL, Söderström getting this chance is important for his development and will be exciting to watch for fans.
