The Arizona Coyotes decided to hold on to goaltender Ivan Prosvetov signing him to a new one-year, two-way contract earlier this summer.
The 24-year-old mostly played for the Coyotes’ AHL affiliate the Tucson Roadrunners last season posting a 16-13-4 record, 3.06 GAA and a .900 save percentage.
Upon signing his contract, Prosvetov was ecstatic to remain in Arizona.
“I was really excited to get it done,” Prosvetov said via TucsonRoadrunners.com’s Jimmy Peebles. “For me, it was really big to be back for a fifth year, it’s just so stable for me. It goes by quick, but I always remind myself to enjoy every moment playing for the Roadrunners or the Coyotes. The hockey life isn’t as long, so you have to take every moment and enjoy it.”
Over the past few seasons, Prosvetov has really found a home in Tucson, a place where any sort of hockey rink is difficult to find. That doesn't matter to the Russian native as he has adapted and embraced spending most of the year in Tucson.
“I’m really excited, Tucson is one of my favorite cities,” Prosvetov said. “It’s great to live there, and you can’t beat the weather, it’s always sunny and always nice. I always say that, but that’s how it is. Overall, it’s good to be a part of this organization, and to play my fifth professional season (in Arizona) is really cool.”
One of Prosvetov’s former teammates in Tucson, Adin Hill once sat in a similar situation to Prosvetov but got his chance with the Vegas Golden Knights and helped lead them to a Stanley Cup. While this sort of situation is uncommon, Prosvetov must be prepared to get called up to the NHL at any moment.
“You never know when (the next call) is going to come,” Prosvetov said. “You have to be ready to take that opportunity, and you have to get a little lucky too. I’m definitely hoping that it’s coming for me as well, but I’m taking things step by step.”
Prosvetov was called up to the Coyotes at the end of last season posting a 4-3 record, .880 GAA and 3.98 save percentage.
To become a reliable and consistent NHL goalie, Prosvetov will have to show some major improvements but he has continued to work on his game this summer and is looking forward to showing everyone what he is capable of this upcoming season.
“I’ve been keeping myself in shape physically, getting my cardio up and working out in the gym,” Prosvetov said. “I’m looking forward to getting more wins, I think we’re going to have a really good team this year and be exciting for the fans to see.”
