Another team that's undergone an identity change is looking to take step forward, just like Utah.
A theme across the teams we've previewed so far seems to be the Western Conference is returning to its roots as a physical conference.
The Edmonton Oilers embraced it on their way back to the Stanley Cup Final, and now their rivals in the province are doing the exact same thing.
Gone are the days of high scoring with Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan, and in is the power game led by Jonathan Huberdeau and Mikael Backlund.
Recent additions of Dryden Hunt, Nazem Kadri, and Anthony Mantha have all but reinforced the direction the Calgary Flames want to travel in.
The Utah Hockey Club has been also reinforcing that notion throughout the off-season, and it shapes up to be some physical contests between the Flames and Utah this season.
The most interesting matchup is in the goalkeeper position.
Connor Ingram has been coming into his own, and Flames goaltender Dustin Wolf has also been seen as a potential Vezina contender in the future.
(Not to mention ESPN's Kevin Weekes said Ingram snuck his way into the Vezina race last season.)
That said, it could come down to whose goaltender can make the bigger save, as it will for most of these matchups against the Western Conference.
But it especially will make a difference against a Flames team that is looking to take a big step forward this season in their return to being a contender.
Which means every game between Calgary and Utah could be meaningful -- just what general manager Bill Armstrong wants.
