The Arizona Coyotes have placed forward Zack Kassian and defenseman Patrik Nemeth on unconditional waivers on Tuesday in order to buyout the remaining one year of their respective contracts.
Kassian had two goals in 51 games for the Coyotes this past season. The 32-year-old had one year remaining on his contract at a cap hit of $3.2 million. Despite not being on the Coyotes, he will still count for $1.67 million for Arizona next season and $766,667 during the 2024-25 campaign.
In his 12-year NHL career, Kassian has 92 goals, 111 assists and 203 points.
The 31-year-old Nemeth recorded five assists in 75 games. He had a cap hit of $2.5 million going into next year. Nemeth will count for $166,667 against the cap in 2023-24 and $1.17 million in 2024-25.
The veteran defenseman has 10 goals, 60 assists and 70 points through his 10-year NHL career.
Arizona is in a peculiar situation as they are spending 28 percent of next season's cap hit on players who won’t even play for the team.
