The Utah Mammoth lost last night against the Chicago Blackhawks and fell to 1-2-0 on the season.
Unfortunately, after all the offseason buzz, the club is off to a slow start. However, it shouldn't cause too much panic amongst the fanbase.
Despite being 1-2-0, they’ve played some good hockey. Some of their stars are showing up and scoring, they just aren’t doing enough to win games. That’s something that can be fixed with a few practices and, most importantly, some time spent watching film.
A team would rather have their stars show up and fall short than fall short with their stars being ghosts. That said, every coach would prefer to see their best players find ways to win games. That’s obvious.
The Mammoth have good structure, but so far this season they've lacked some consistency within their lineup. In the first two games they went with an 11-7 setup. Then, when Barrett Hayton returned from injury, they went with 12-6 but were without Sean Durzi, who was injured in the game against the Nashville Predators. There have been a lot of moving parts in their lineup. Once things become more consistent, everything should start to click.
With that said, the Mammoth play the Calgary Flames and San Jose Sharks this week. If they can come out 2-0 on that homestand, all the talk and panic among the fanbase will go away. However, if they don’t, it may be time to change a few things up in their lineup, because the panic buttons will be pressed and rightfully so.
