The club blew a 4-1 lead in the third period in their fourth straight loss.
Just when the Utah Hockey Club seemed poised to break out of their slump, they learned the hard way that sharks can bite back.
And when it's the San Jose Sharks, they bite hard.
A flurry of late goals in the third period turned a seemingly insurmountable lead on its head, and Alex Wennberg finished off the comeback as the Sharks pulled off the biggest upset of the young NHL season with a 5-4 overtime win over the Utah Hockey Club Monday night at a stunned Delta Center.
Utah (4-4-2) lost its fourth straight game, but this might have been the most painful one of all against a team that was winless in nine straight to start the year.
"I can't (explain the last five minutes)," head coach Andre Tourigny said. "That's not who we are. That's not who we want to be."
It seemed that Utah had all the answers, especially Matias Maccelli, who scored his first two goals of the season, his second multi-goal game of his career.
Defenceman Mikhail Sergachev scored what ended up being Utah's last goal with under 30 seconds left in the second period to make it a 4-1 game heading into the third period.
But things began to unravel when Fabian Zetterlund tipped in a flutterball shot from the point to make it 4-2 with four minutes left, setting off a chain reaction of Sharks goals from Mikael Granlund and Tyler Toffoli that tied the game in less than two minutes.
The collapse was completed when Alex Wennberg roofed a shot on Connor Ingram just 1:26 into the fourth period.
And the fans didn't shy from voicing their displeasure for the third straight home game, unleashing choruses of boos at the horn in regulation and after the winning goal by Wennberg.
Now Utah has to hope they can stop the bleeding against a red-hot Calgary Flames team on Wednesday, even as their playoff chances continue to already slip away.
"It's 100% mental; we need to unpack that," Tourigny said. "We stopped putting pressure. We let them play with the puck. We let them make plays."
