Patrick Breen/The Republic - Shane Doan Breaks Silence as Role With Maple Leafs Becomes Official

Former Arizona Coyotes captain Shane Doan has officially been hired as the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Special Advisor to the General Manager.

Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving announced today that he is looking forward to having Doan and feel that his past experiences make him a great fit for the franchise.

“I'm very excited to welcome Shane to the Toronto Maple Leafs,” said Treliving. “Through his more than 1,500 NHL games played, his management roles, being an NHL team captain for more than a decade and being just a wonderful human being, Shane has touched all the aspects of the game which make him a terrific fit with the Maple Leafs organization, its staff and players.”

Doan played in the NHL for 21 seasons from 1995-2017 all with the Winnipeg Jets-Arizona organization. In 2021 Doan joined the Coyotes’ front office as the Chief Hockey Development Officer.

While Doan has spent over two decades in Arizona and cherishes his time in the Valley, this opportunity in Toronto was too much for the 46-year-old to pass up on.

“I would like to thank Alex Meruelo, Xavier Gutierrez, and Bill Armstrong for providing me with the opportunity to work in the Coyotes front office for the past three seasons,” Doan said.

“It was an incredible learning experience that prepared me for the next step in my career. It's extremely difficult for me to leave the Coyotes but the opportunity to work for a storied franchise like the Toronto Maple Leafs was something that I couldn't pass up. The Coyotes will always be very special to me, and I wish Alex and the organization all the best in the future. The Valley will always be my home."

Doan is eager to start the next chapter of his career with the Maple Leafs.

“I am honoured to join the Toronto Maple Leafs in this role. The Maple Leafs have a such deep history and a passionate fan base, and I'm excited to contribute in any way I can in the organization's pursuit of their ultimate goal,” said Doan. “I'm also thrilled to once again work alongside Brad Treliving and continue a working relationship that began during Brad's time with the Coyotes.”

The Coyotes organization will certainly miss Doan’s presence but fully understand his decision to join the Maple Leafs and are extremely thankful for all he has done for the community.

“We would like to congratulate Shane on this new role with Toronto,” Coyotes’ Owner, Chairman and Governor Alex Meruelo stated. “He approached us with the desire to explore a new challenge in his career and we absolutely feel he deserves this opportunity. I would like to thank him for being an advisor to me for the past three years and for everything he has done for our hockey operations, coaching staff, business operations and foundation.

“We can't thank Shane enough for all his efforts to give back to the Valley community and to grow the game of hockey in Arizona. No one has done more for the Coyotes or the game of hockey in Arizona than Shane. He has been an incredible ambassador for our franchise and has represented the Coyotes with class, dignity, and professionalism. We wish him the best of luck in his new role, and he will always be a part of the Coyotes family.”
