Happy Monday Utah Mammoth fans.
It's that time of the week again, where we look back at the week that was on the The Hockey News' Mammoth site.
Enjoy.
Franchise-breaking records, like the Utah Mammoth’s seven-game winning streak, are always fun and exciting.
But when records eventually end — as they did for Utah in its 6-3 loss to the Edmonton Oilers — the question becomes: what went wrong?
In this case, what went wrong was the dominant offensive performance the Oilers put on in the second period, scoring five goals in a single period — the highest mark by an NHL team this season.
BREAKING NEWS: The Utah Mammoth have signed forward Logan Cooley to an eight-year, $80 million contract extension that pays him $10 million per season on the annual average value (AAV).
This comes just weeks after reports surfaced that he turned down a monster deal that left the fan base shook. Now, he is locked up for eight more years at a very good valued contract for what he can produce for the team.
Utah Mammoth stars Logan Cooley and Dylan Guenther along with their mascot Tusky were given the chance to guest star on College Game day today, as the show made its way to Utah.
Every week, the show travels to another city and sets up shop in that town before the game. Today, they went to Utah, where the Utah Utes are taking on Cincinnati Bearcats in a Big 12 matchup.
Going into its game against the Lightning, Utah was considered one of the fastest teams in the NHL. When watching the Mammoth play, it’s evident this squad has speed.
Whether it’s a JJ Peterka breakaway or Logan Cooley — the second-fastest player in the league according to NHL EDGE — slipping past defensemen to create open lanes, Utah’s speed has been a big problem for opponents.
But against an experienced Tampa Bay Lightning team, that speed was contained — and ultimately, the Lightning came away with a 4-2 win because of it.
Tomorrow night, the Utah Mammoth and the Buffalo Sabres face off for the first time since their summer blockbuster trade.
That blockbuster trade sent J.J. Peterka to the Mammoth for Josh Doan and Michael Kesselring. The deal addressed needs for both clubs and has proven to be a good one, with both teams benefiting from it.
