NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, in his State of the League press conference Saturday in Florida, said the Smiths were quite literally "drinking from a fire hose" in this transition period.
In less than two months, they've gained a new franchise, set up a new arena, signed on an entry-level prospect, brought on a new alternate governor, and sold over 34,000 potential season tickets.
The fire hose was strong, but the Smiths have been even stronger.
It was certainly a daunting task; Ryan Smith said so to Hans Olsen and Scott Garrard of The KSL Sports Zone on their radio show last week.
But when the commissioner is giving you flowers, you know it's real.
With the NHL Draft coming up in less than two weeks, the test is only getting bigger.
Utah holds the no. 6 pick in the draft, and many are clamoring for them to take a defenceman in that draft.
Some are even yelling for GM Bill Armstrong to make a huge splash and acquire Mitch Marner, when he's made it clear there will be "no short-term fixes" in this rebuild.
To say nothing of the Delta Center's uneven sightlines for hockey, which reduced the capacity further from its original plan of 12,000.
Knowing the Smiths, however, the way they've listened to their fans, they will find a way around these issues and then eventually solve them.
It's what the commissioner believes, and it's what we all believe as Utahns.
Man, they grow up so fast...
