It's been one week since the Utah Hockey Club dropped the puck on its time in the NHL, but its impact has gone far beyond the game itself.

It started with a press conference where Gary Bettman got cheered, and it ended with the home team celebrating its first-ever win.

Ever since then, the Utah Hockey Club has turned heads around the league with a surprising 3-1-0 start, marked by a massive upset Saturday of the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.

But it would not have been possible without the memories made on Opening Night, which included a fan fest and a concert by Shaboozey.

I have never seen the corner of 300 West and South Temple so packed with fans in a long time; it was like the whole city had turned out.

And those fans also knew what they were watching.

That's the thing that made Utah's opening night last Tuesday so memorable: the fans are passionate and they know good sports when they see it.

The other thing about Utah's fans? They spread the word like wildfire.

It isn't a lie when my colleague Remy Mastey wrote that hockey fever was spreading rapidly in the Beehive State.

Some of my friends from BYU, where I graduated just a year ago, and even in my ward are talking about the Utah Hockey Club, and they all want in on the hype train.

Utah HC's inaugural game wasn't just a one-off deal, it was the start of something bigger, and it was more than just the pomp and pageantry of the events taking place outside the Delta Center.

That game and that night was about a team that needed a fresh start, and the fans gave it to them in spades.

Who knows what we could be in for next.
