With his two top defencemen down, the Utah Hockey Club needed to call in the reserves.
They've done just that in acquiring Olli Maatta from the Detroit Red Wings for a third-round pick in next year's NHL Draft, further adding depth to a depleted blue line in need of it tonight against the red-hot Calgary Flames.
"For us to add another Stanley Cup winner into that dressing room, that's huge for us," general manager Bill Armstrong said. "We're the second-youngest team in the league, and we've got to calm that down."
That youth has certainly shown in the last seven games, losing six of them, and coming off an unthinkable collapse just 48 hours ago against previously winless San Jose.
And Armstrong isn't sitting idly by while it happens; he said his moves are to improve the club are just beginning.
"If we can look to add around (the core), we're always going to do that," he added. "Every morning we get up, we're looking to improve the club."
