The Utah HC are in a unique position this off-season. They have significantly strengthened their roster through strategic trades for Mikhail Sergahev and John Marino at the 2024 NHL Draft.
Since they have re-signed their RFA and positioned themselves well for further additions in the upcoming season.
However, before that, they could be in a prime position to secure a solid veteran forward on a PTO.
Introducing James Van Riemsdyk, also known as JVR!
The former second-overall draft pick in 2007 is a UFA in search of a new home. Utah could be the perfect fit for him.
At 35 years old, Van Riemsdyk continues to deliver offensively. In 71 games with the Boston Bruins, he scored 11 goals and 27 assists for 38 points. Last season, he played a minor role, which is expected given his signing with Utah. However, he has the ability to step up when needed.
For Utah, the connection is clear. They have a young core that could greatly benefit from the addition of a veteran presence. Van Riemsdyk is well-versed in the NHL and has experience with the pressure of high-stakes games during his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The advantage of signing someone on a PTO is that they attend training camp. Should they not impress the organization, there's no financial loss. However, if they do make an impact, they often sign at a more affordable price.
If the PTO leads to a contract, Van Riemsdyk could be offered a deal ranging from $1.5-$2 million for a one-year contract. The benefit for Utah is that it would make it easier to move a draft pick at the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline if they are not in the playoff race.
Utah could use PTOs to fill forward positions and potentially add a defenseman to strengthen their backline. This approach also offers players a chance to gauge the market before making a formal commitment to the team.
