As the 2024 NHL Draft is looming closer, free agency is also heating up.
There will be plenty of defencemen to go around this off-season, and one of the names coming up is Los Angeles blue-liner Matt Roy.
Roy, a graduate of Michigan Tech, was drafted in 2015 by Los Angeles and began his career in 2017 with the Ontario Reign of the AHL.
He then played 70 games in his first full season in Tinseltown, recording 18 points and a +16 rating.
Roy played a full 82-game season in 2022-23 before playing 81 more this past season, totaling 51 points, including 37 assists, amassing a career plus-minus of +67.
His 3-year, $9.5 million extension is up this off-season, signed in 2021 to supplement his 2-year, $1.4 million extension he originally signed in 2019 after his entry level deal expired.
With $43 million in cap space this off-season, Roy could be able to fit right into the second or third defence pairings for Utah, alongside either Jusso Valimaki or Sean Durzi (should Utah decide to re-sign either of them).
Whether or not Utah decides to actually go after Roy remains to be seen, especially with plenty of good blue-liners going around.
