There are now six NHL teams without a captain; some notables are the Tampa Bay Lightning, Anaheim Ducks, and Buffalo Sabres. Another team is the Utah Hockey Club; they could be looking to name a captain this season, but it isn't a top priority for the organization.
On the other hand, it could be something that is at the top of GM Bill Armstrong's list this offseason. But the question is, who will it be? There are a few good candidates to take on the "C" on the roster, so let's take a look at them.
Firstly, Clayton Keller has to be the most obvious option for the vacancy. He has been with the team since he was drafted in 2016. He is also considered by many to be the face of the franchise and a guy the team should build around.
They have shown they are building a great young core, and giving Keller the "C" would confirm that they want him to be a part of the franchise moving forward.
The other option that would be a good one would be newly acquired defenseman Mikhail Sergachev. Although being new to a team can be tough, he is a pro who spent the last seven years playing on the same teams as one of the best captains in the last 15 years, Steven Stamkos.
He would bring a different voice to the locker room, but also a winning voice. Sergachev knows what it takes to win; he's done it with the Lightning. Regardless of whether he is wearing the "C" or not, he will likely be a stabilizing force for the team.
If Utah doesn't name a captain this season, it wouldn't be shocking if both Keller and Sergachev were named assistants. They both will be vital to Utah's success this season.
