Zach Benson's top-notch playmaking skills and impressive two-way game make him an intriguing prospect for the Arizona Coyotes to take a look at.

Should the Arizona Coyotes consider selecting Zach Benson in the first round of the 2023 NHL Draft?

The 18-year-old forward played for the Winnipeg Ice of the Western Hockey League this past season where he had 36 goals, 62 assists and 98 points. He put up the third most points only trailing behind forwards Connor Bedard and Chase Wheatcroft.

Benson is known for his elite hockey IQ as he is one of the better playmakers in this year's draft class.

“One of the smartest players in this year’s draft class, Benson plays the game two or three steps ahead of the rest of the players on the ice,” Tony Ferrari of The Hockey news wrote. “Whereas most players have a Plan A and maybe a Plan B, Benson usually has a Plan C, D, and E.”

Standing at about 5 '10'’, Benson’s size is a little bit of a concern since it's tough to tell if his game will translate well into the NHL. However, Benson does not let his size dictate the way he plays.

“He’s only 5-foot-10, but he’s strong, has a great release and his shift-to-shift effort level will never waver. Benson’s going to be a big-time play driver,” Steven Ellis of Daily Faceoff wrote.

Another positive aspect to Benson’s game is his ability to make an impact both offensively and defensively. He is a great two-way forward and is versatile, being able to play both on the wing and down the middle.

“He challenges opposing players with aggressive stick checks and body position,” Chris Peters of Flo Hockey wrote. “What makes that skill even more effective is how quickly he can force turnovers and immediately make a dangerous play off a pass or shot.”

Despite being more of a pass first type of player, Benson still has a quick shot and has shown to be a reliable goalscorer.

Having a player like Benson would help the Coyotes in a tremendous way. Benson would slot perfectly on the team’s power play that already consists of All-Star Clayton Keller. He certainly has the potential to be a top-six forward in the NHL.

Benson should be available for Arizona at their sixth overall pick and could still be on the board by the 12th pick if teams are concerned about picking him over his size.

If the Coyotes are looking to select a playmaker, Benson should be at the top of their lists.
