Quinn Hughes is six assists away from passing Alex Edler for the most assists in Vancouver Canucks history by a defenceman.

The Vancouver Canucks current road trip should be a historic one for captain Quinn Hughes. Currently sitting at 305 career assists, Hughes is just six away from passing Alex Edler for the most assists by a defenceman in franchise history. Based on the final five opponents on this road trip, the Canucks first game back home on December 6 will most likely include a pre-game celebration for Hughes, who should by then be the franchise's all-time leader in assists by a defenceman.

Over his career, Hughes has had plenty of success against Vancouver's next five opponents. Below is a look at his games played and assist totals against the next five teams the Canucks play:
Looking at the five opponents, there should be plenty of opportunity for Hughes to record the six assists needed to pass Alex Edler. Pittsburgh and Detroit are both near the bottom of the playoffs, while Boston and Buffalo are both giving up over three goals per game. With the main Hughes has been playing recently, the stars are aligning for this record to be broken on the road trip.
As for a projection, the most likely outcome is that Hughes breaks the record against either the Red Wings or the Wild. While in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter who he breaks the record against, it would be interesting to watch Hughes hit 311 assists versus Detroit, as they famously passed on him during the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. Setting the record in Detroit would also be special, as Hughes has a deep connection with the State of Michigan, where he and his brothers live during the offseason.
If anything, this record is a good reminder of just how dominant Hughes has been through the first seven years of his NHL career. He is hitting assist marks at speeds only Hall of Famers have achieved and is well on his way to becoming the greatest player in franchise history. Even if he doesn't hit the mark on this road trip, Hughes is expected to have a massive impact over the next five games.
