Speaking of Pettersson, there are a lot of questions surrounding his performance against the Americans. As mentioned, he played less than ten minutes and didn't see the ice for the final 15:07 of the game. Overall, Pettersson's performance was disappointing and will raise questions once he returns to Vancouver.
While this game had no impact on the championship game, both teams still put on an impressive performance. There were some massive hits and big blocks, as players were not afraid to put their bodies on the line. Ultimately, Sweden and the USA put on a show at TD Garden and showed why more best-on-best international events need to occur.
As for the star of the game, that would be Swedish goaltender Samuel Ersson. The Philadephia Flyers goaltender was sprung into action due to the flu knocking Sweden's other two goaltenders and stood on his head, stopping 32 of the 33 shots he faced. While he wasn't named the game's first star, he was phenomenal and a massive reason why Sweden was able to defeat the Americans on Monday night.
With the preliminary round of the tournament now complete, all eyes will be on Thursday's final between Canada and the USA. The Americans took the first matchup between these two teams on Saturday, as they defeated the Canadians 3-1 in Montréal. Puck drop for Thursday's final is set for 5:00 pm PT and can be viewed on Sportsnet.
