Club practiced power play and penalty kill for first time at training camp Saturday

After two days of practice drills and a Saturday morning scrimmage, the Vancouver Canucks worked on special teams for the first time at training camp in Victoria.

There is plenty of intrigue about the personnel Rick Tocchet will deploy on both the power play and penalty kill this season.

On Saturday, Brock Boeser joined the top group on the power play along with Elias Pettersson, Quinn Hughes, JT Miller and Andrei Kuzmenko. The big question is who will assume the bumper role occupied for much of the past few seasons by the now departed Bo Horvat. At practice, the Canucks experimented with a variety of looks without revealing one distinct replacement for Horvat. The team ran drills that had Elias Pettersson -- usually based on the right half-boards -- operating from behind the net.

The second power play grouping featured Conor Garland, Anthony Beauvillier, Pius Suter and Nils Höglander with Filip Hronek as the lone defenseman. However, the second time through drills Christian Wolanin got an opportunity replacing Höglander as the Canucks experimented with a three forward-two defenseman set.

The first penalty killers over the boards during drills were Teddy Blueger and Phil DiGiuseppe up front with newcomers Ian Cole and Carson Soucy together on defense. The second PK unit featured Nils Aman and Dakota Joshua at forward with Tyler Myers and Guillaume Brisebois paired together on defense.

Additional players like Vasily Podkolzin and Jack Rathbone took turns on a third power play while the likes of Jack Studnicka, Akito Hirose, Noah Juulsen and Matt Irwin saw spot duty as extra penalty killers.
