The Vancouver Canucks have locked up a key piece of their defense for another season as they re-signed Derek Fobort to a one-year extension. The 33-year-old's new contract will pay him $2 million, a slight raise from the $1.5 million he earned in 2024-25. Last season, Forbort played 54 games, recording 11 points and 77 blocked shots.

In a statement, GM Patrik Allvin wrote, "Bringing Derek back for another season is an important move for our group. His strong defensive play and solid work on the penalty kill really helped solidify our back end this past year. Derek has a strong voice in the room and some impressive leadership qualities, and we will look to him to help our team continue to grow and improve this coming season."

Forbort gives the Canucks even more depth on their blue line. Last season, he played a key role on the penalty kill and was a leader in the locker room. Forbort also spent significant time paired with younger players in 2024-25 and served as a mentor to both Elias Pettersson and Victor Mancini.

With Forbort signed, Vancouver now has an estimated $12 million in cap space for the 2025-26 season. He is one of seven defencemen from last year's roster who are signed and played at least ten games in 2024-25. Over his 550 career games, Forbort has recorded 106 points along with 936 blocked shots and 923 hits.
